Methyltransferases are a large family of enzymes that catalyze the transfer of a methyl group from a donor (usually S-adenosyl-l-methionine or SAM) to a substrate. Methyltransferases are an important tool in the study of gene expression, protein function, and epigenetics. Histone methyltransferases facilitate post-translational modifications of histones that determine gene expression. DNA methyltransferases such as DNMT1, DNMT2, and DNMT3 also play a role in epigenetics. Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), which catalyzes the transfer of the methyl group of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) into catechol substrates, plays roles in the metabolism of catechol estrogens and the inactivation of catecholamine neurotransmitters. Acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase (ASMT) is involved in the biosynthesis of melatonin from serotonin. Visit the supplier page for more product information, including enzyme activity.
