Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is a metalloenzyme first extracted from the root of the horseradish plant that catalyzes the oxidation of substrates using hydrogen peroxide. There are many isoforms of the enzyme, with horseradish peroxidase C being the most common. The oxidation activity of HRP is commonly used to react with substrates, producing derivatives that can be detected via colorimetric, fluorometric, or luminescent methods. Common HRP substrates include DAB, AEC, TMB, ECL, and luminol. HRP-conjugated proteins and antibodies are ideal in applications such as ELISAs, Western, Northern, and Southern blots, as well as other staining methods. The HRP enzyme is a 44.17 kDa glycoprotein.
