Gel documentation systems, also known as 'gel docs' or 'gel imagers,' are used to record and analyze the results of gel electrophoresis and membrane blotting experiments.
These instruments are necessary for visualizing stained or labeled nucleic acids and proteins in media such as agarose, acrylamide, or cellulose.
Systems come in a variety of configurations depending on application, throughput, and sample type.

Types of Gel Doc Systems
The type of gel documentation systems required by a laboratory will depend on application and detection method.
- Chemiluminesce: used primarily for western blotting,
- CCD/Digital Ethidum bromide (UV),infrared, chemiluminescence, 3 colorfluorescence, densometric and visible light detectors are available to take a quantitative reads of nucleic acid and protein bands, dot blots and microplates.
- Multiplex: Detect and image multiple fluorescent signals simultaneously in the same experiments and/or detect luminescent, colorimetric, and radioisotopic signals.
- Phosphoimagers: Enhanced sensitivity for multiplex fluorescence applications and radioisotopes, and flexibility in the choice of emission filters, including custom filters.
