Repeatedly pipetting with multichannel pipettes can be extremely exhausting for your forearms, and quite tedious for a set of 96-well plates. Having an electronic multichannel pipette is extremely helpful for when you need to fill up 96-well plates quickly and without wearing your arms out. We chose to purchase an electronic multichannel from Eppendorf for their customer service, general quality of build, and the awards that the latest round of Xplorer Pipettes have won.

Experimental Design and Results Summary

Application

Pipetting 96-well plates

Starting Material

96-well Plates

Protocol Overview

Set the amount to be dispensed per well, the number of steps, and the pipetting speed, then just hit the center button each time you'd like the pipette to dispense a set amount. The user interface is extremely simple for such a complicated piece of machinery.

Tips

Make sure your tips are snug before pipetting. Also, slow speed is generally better for results than fast.

Results Summary

We have double-checked the dispensed volumes from each of the 8 wells on this pipette, and were quite pleased with its accuracy. Filling up every last well in a 96-well plate takes less than 20 seconds if done at full-speed, which allows for extremely quick assays that involve 96-well plates. Furthermore, the considerable range of this particular model (50uL - 1200uL) makes it extremely versatile. Each and every time that I've used it, this pipette has pleasantly surprised me with its ease of use and accuracy.

Features Summary

Backlit screen for easy reading, 9 different languages, dispensing, pipetting, mixing, dilutions, etc....

Additional Notes

Not all pipette tips work with this model, so try out a couple before starting any large assays.

Summary

The Good

Convenience and reproducibility

The Bad

Expensive.....and not all pipette tips work with it

The Bottom Line

While expensive, this pipette is worth it. The convenience that it gives you when working with 96-well plates is incredible, and allows for much quicker pipetting with much less effort than a manual multichannel pipette. For these reasons and many more, I highly recommend the Eppendorf Xplorer electronic pipettes.
