Calorimeters

Calorimeters, devices used to measure heat capacity, are found in quality assurance and research and development laboratories. Calorimeters are used in applications such as determining substrate binding to enzymes, helpful in characterizing potential drug candidates in the pharmaceutical industry. Differential scanning calorimeters, which measure heat flow by comparison to a reference container, are one of the most common types. Other types of calorimeters include bomb, reaction, constant pressure, isothermic and Calvet-type. The appropriate calorimeter will depend on the experimental application, the temperature range and atmospheric conditions.
